For years, companies have been restricted to existing generic Top Level Domains (gTLDs) like .com, .net or .org to build their brands online. Now, companies can truly control their brands by creating their own ending; one where you direct what appears both before and after the dot. For the first time in history, ICANN is giving you the opportunity to create your own domain ending by opening up the Internet to all parties interested in acquiring new TLDs.
ICANN was founded ten years ago as a not-for-profit, multi-stakeholder organization dedicated to coordinating the Internet's addressing system. One of its foundational principles is to promote competition in the domain name marketplace while ensuring Internet security and stability. ICANN’s recent decision to allow for expansion of gTLDs will allow for more innovation, choice and change in the Internet's addressing system.
The decision to introduce new gTLDs followed a detailed and lengthy consultation process with all constituencies of the global Internet community represented by a wide variety of stakeholders – governments, individuals, civil society, business and intellectual property constituencies, and the technology community.
